kindergarten
{Also: kindy} Kindergarten
Kindy (Kindergarten) in Australia is most commonly used to refer to the first year of Primary School (normally starting age 5), but can be another term for preschool/long day care (0-5).
Normally preschool is referred to as simply ‘care’ or ‘daycare’ but some daycare centres call themselves a kindergarten so Kindy does get used in that context too.
Depends on the state you are in. Here in Victoria “kindie” or “kindy” are virtually unused. Pre-school is called pre-school or childcare, and the first year of school is known only as “Prep”. Some other states / territories use “Reception” for the first year of primary school.
