Short for Broadmeadows, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Home to large Australian families and pensioners. Some families came years ago from the Middle East and southern Europe, plus many newly arrived refugees. All have survived tough times over the years and contribute to make Broady what it is today. Broadmeadows has a strong character and has a large reputation in Melbourne’s imagination for being tough and rough. This is partly true especially in the past but the reputation is exaggerated these days by people who are snobby about a place they don’t understand. In reality the locals are bonded together and get on with life.
Broady is the local name for the suburb of Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Broadbeach was an early tourist destination between WWI and WWII and really cemented its hold with the common use of personal cars. It features lush golden beaches and eateries ranging from median to highly expensive. There is a casino, Pacific Fair shopping centre, and all manner of entertainments, being home to the biggest blues festival in the world (judged just recently).
The famous but forgotten Broadbeach Hotel was also affectionately known as ‘The Broady’ and the name is in common use by Gold Coasters and Brisbanites alike. Broady was also the original destination for Schoolies on the Gold Coast before the government and local council stated to provide suitable entertainment and security to the Surfers Paradise precinct as schoolies numbers swelled and Broady was deemed not to have suitable facilities for them as it had become more upmarket, so to speak.
